The waterfall stop in Igatpuri that turned into a long break

I had planned to stop at the waterfall in Igatpuri for maybe fifteen or twenty minutes. I was on a short monsoon trip and had a few places I wanted to see before heading back. When I noticed the water rushing down the hillside beside the road, I decided it was worth stopping for a quick look.

It turned out to be one of those stops that completely changed my plans. What was supposed to be a short break became almost an afternoon of sitting, talking, having tea, and simply watching the rain come down around the waterfall. Looking back, it was probably the most relaxed part of my Igatpuri trip.

I hadn’t specifically set out to find that particular waterfall. During the monsoon, Igatpuri seems to have water appearing everywhere. Streams run beside roads, small waterfalls emerge from rocky slopes and hills that look dry during other months suddenly become full of life.

While driving through the area, I noticed water rushing down a rocky section of the hillside. There were already a few people stopped nearby, so I decided to pull over. I thought I would take a couple of photographs and continue.

The first few minutes at Igatpuri were just about taking photos

Like most people, my first reaction was to take out my phone. The waterfall looked especially good with the misty hills behind it. The rocks were dark from the rain, and everything around the water was covered in fresh green vegetation.

I took several pictures from different angles. Then I put my phone away. The rain had become lighter, and a cool breeze was coming through the hills. Instead of getting back into the car, I found a spot where I could sit comfortably and decided to stay for a few more minutes. Those few minutes became much longer.

The best thing about seeing a waterfall during the monsoon is that you rarely get the same scenery twice. The water kept changing as the rain moved through the hills. Sometimes it flowed heavily, and sometimes it seemed calmer. Mist drifted across the landscape, occasionally covering parts of the hillside.

The sound was also something I hadn’t expected to enjoy so much. There was the constant rush of falling water, rain hitting the leaves and the occasional sound of vehicles passing along the road. It wasn’t completely silent, but it felt far removed from the noise of everyday city life.

After sitting there for a while, I realised I wasn’t in a hurry anymore. There was nothing particularly important waiting for me at the next stop. I had originally made a list of places to visit, but the waterfall had made me reconsider the whole idea of following the list strictly.

So I stayed. I watched people arrive, take photographs and leave. A few families stopped for snacks. Some travellers stood quietly near the water, enjoying the weather. Eventually, I joined in with the simplest possible plan, which included finding some tea and enjoying the view.

There is something about having hot tea during the monsoon that makes an ordinary break feel special. I found a nearby place serving tea and snacks and came back with a steaming cup. Sitting there with the cool air around me and the sound of water in the background was exactly what I needed.

I wasn’t checking the time. I wasn’t thinking about the next destination. For a little while, the trip became less about sightseeing and more about enjoying where I happened to be.

Staying nearby makes monsoon trips easier at Igatpuri

If you are planning a similar trip, I would recommend keeping your schedule flexible and staying somewhere convenient. Several hotels in Igatpuri make a good base for exploring the surrounding hills and waterfalls. Having a comfortable room nearby means you don’t have to worry about travelling a long distance after spending several hours outdoors in the rain.

It also gives you the option of taking a break during heavy showers and heading out again when the weather improves. During the monsoon, that flexibility can be more useful than a perfectly planned itinerary.

I stayed much longer than I expected in Igatpuri

By the time I finally decided to leave, I realised that my quick waterfall stop had turned into a long break. I had spent far more time there than I had planned, but I didn’t feel that I had missed out on anything.

In fact, I felt the opposite. Sometimes a trip becomes memorable because you manage to visit every place on your list. Other times, it is one unexpected stop that stays with you. For me, it was that waterfall.

Final thoughts

Igatpuri has plenty of places worth visiting during the monsoon, but you don’t always have to search for a famous attraction to enjoy the hills.

Sometimes, a roadside waterfall is enough.

Stopping for what I thought would be fifteen minutes gave me one of the most peaceful breaks of the entire trip. I watched the rain, listened to the water, drank tea and simply enjoyed having nowhere else to be for a while.

If you are visiting Igatpuri during the rainy season, leave some space in your itinerary. You never know when a waterfall, a misty hillside or a sudden change in weather will make you want to stop. 

That day, I stopped for a waterfall. I stayed because I didn’t feel like leaving.
